Overactive Bladder

An overactive bladder is a condition characterized by the uncontrollable urge to urinate. It occurs when the muscles that control the flow of urine weaken and is called urinary incontinence.

Botox Injection

Botox injection is used to treat urinary incontinence. Botox is a drug derived from a bacterium that paralyzes your muscles temporarily. When injected, it helps in relaxing the urinary bladder muscles.

Procedure

At first, your doctor flushes the bladder with local anaesthesia using a catheter (narrow tube) to numb the bladder. A scope (a thin tube with a light and camera attached) is passed through the urethra (a tube that allows urine to pass out of your body) and into the bladder. A small needle is inserted through the scope and Botox is injected into the muscles of the bladder. The effects of Botox last for 6 to 8 months.

There are very few instances of Botox causing any complications. However, urinary retention or the inability to completely empty your bladder may occur, which can be avoided by limiting the amount of Botox injected.
